The students of Wayne D. Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs visted Walmart this morning to participate in an annual Christmas shopping event sponsored by the Glenda Jean Mostyn and Joe E. Moreno Educational Foundation “Christmas Lights” program.
Through the program, each student is given up to $50 to purchase gifts for themselves or others. The donations are graciously given in memory of Jean Mostyn, who worked at Boshears for many years when it was housed on the St. Louis campus. Following each special shopping trip, the students and their families are provided a catered holiday luncheon with their teachers and Santa Claus. This year, the luncheon is provided by Cathy Hallman of Hallman Trucks and Trailers of Tyler.
The Christmas Lights program benefits students enrolled in Texas public school districts life skills classrooms during the Christmas season. Unlike other programs that solicit toys to give to needy children, this program takes children to a local retail store so they may select and purchase their own Christmas gifts. This allows the children to use critical skills such as math, decision-making, social skills and other important life skills with the guidance of their teachers.
