Trustee Spotlight: Rev. Orenthia Mason

January 17, 2017

Throughout January, School Board Recognition Month, Tyler ISD is honoring school board members as their “All-Star Team” and thanking them for their commitment to serving students, parents and staff. Take a moment to learn more about Trustee Rev. Orenthia Mason.

Trustee Spotlight – Rev. Orenthia Mason

Rev. Orenthia Mason has served as Trustee, representing District 2, since 2005. She spent 27 years of her career in education at Tyler ISD working as a teacher, elementary school consultant, Title I coordinator and principal. She was also a fourth-grade teacher for three years at Chandler Elementary School in Chandler, TX.

Rev. Mason says what she values most about serving on the Board of Trustees is making a positive impact in the lives of students and staff. She also enjoys working with others to create safe and encouraging learning environments for all students.

Rev. Mason attended T.J. Austin and Mamie G. Griffin elementary schools, Dogan Junior High School and graduated from Emmett J. Scott High School and Texas College. She earned a Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin University and has completed 45 hours of postgraduate work in school administration and supervision. Rev. Mason has done further studies at The University of Texas at Tyler, University of St. Thomas and the Universidad de Compostela in Compostela, Spain.

When asked who her favorite teacher was as a child, Rev. Mason says, “One of my favorite teachers when I was a student was Mrs. Ollie Crawford, my high school art teacher at Emmett J. Scott High School.  She was kind, soft spoken, but demanded the best from her art students.  You were amazed at her talent in drawing, painting, calligraphy, etc. She masterfully guided you in developing your artistic skills.  She was also the Photography Club sponsor.  That is where I developed my love for photography.  We learned to take pictures, develop the pictures and improve upon our skill each time. As a member of the yearbook staff, I often took the photographs.  Today, photography is one of my hobbies.”

Thank you, Rev. Mason, for your commitment and service on the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees.
