Trustee Spotlight: Jean Washington

January 27, 2017

Throughout January, School Board Recognition Month, Tyler ISD is honoring school board members as their “All-Star Team” and thanking them for their commitment to serving students, parents and staff. Take a moment to learn more about Trustee Jean Washington.

Trustee Spotlight – Jean Washington

Mrs. Jean Washington has served as Trustee, representing District 3, since 2013 and brings more than 35 years of teaching experience to the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees.

Mrs. Washington says what she values most about serving on the Board of Trustees is the knowledge that she has gained from going to the meetings, workshops, and conventions. “That knowledge has allowed me the opportunity to help increase the overall student learning atmosphere in our district. Also, working with all of these wonderful and intelligent individuals on the Board has been a great experience.”

A former educator, Mrs. Washington taught in Waskom ISD and Tyler ISD. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Texas College and completed graduate coursework at East Texas State University, now Texas A&M University-Commerce, and The University of Texas at Tyler.

When asked who her favorite teacher was as a child, Mrs. Washington says, “The teacher who made the biggest impact on me was my middle school economics teacher, Ms. Mary Freeman. She taught me how to sew my first skirt made out of pink corduroy. She was patient, loyal, and understanding. Even though my pattern was wrong, she was very encouraging and reassured me in my abilities. Everyone loved Ms. Freeman.”

Thank you, Mrs. Washington, for your commitment and service on the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees.
