Hubbard Middle School celebrates AVID national recognition

April 7, 2017

Hubbard Middle School recently celebrated an honor obtained by only 3% of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) systems across the nation. After completing a rigorous validation process, Hubbard has been named a National AVID Demonstration School for others to model. The only school in East Texas to be named a Demonstration School, Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford referred to the honor during a celebration ceremony as the “national championship” of the AVID system.

AVID is a college readiness system to assist and mentor students with a strong desire to attend college. Hubbard Middle School exemplifies key characteristics of a quality AVID model for others to replicate. The recognition as an AVID National Demonstration Site means the school will now take on the role of an AVID teaching and learning center for other schools and organizations to model.

“AVID helps students create and implement the skills they need to be successful in a college setting,” Tyler ISD AVID Coordinator Lillian Brooks says. “Although AVID is taught in an elective course period, its fundamental curriculum, such as writing strategies, critical thinking skills, Cornell note-taking, organizational skills and reading strategies, is reinforced throughout the day in all subjects.”

At Hubbard, data supports the success of the AVID system and drives the overall campus goals and practices. Increases in overall student attendance, as well as enrollment in 6th grade college prep classes and 8th grade Algebra, are just a few of the noted successes of the AVID College Readiness System at Hubbard.

Betsy Jones, Hubbard parent and PTA president, praises AVID, administrators and teachers for their continued work in incorporating AVID strategies throughout the school and culture.

“Hubbard Middle School now offers the total package for student success in middle school - academics that serve students on a variety of learning levels and the tools and support students need to reach their goals,” she said. “We are so proud to be a Husky family.”
