Meredith McCook, a 2005 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, is a professional musician for the Kansas City Symphony.  An accomplished section cellist, Meredith previously played with the New World Symphony in Miami for four years before joining the Kansas City Symphony where she has performed for two years. During the concert season, Meredith performs weekly for 42 weeks.

Here are a few of Meredith’s favorite memories from her days in Tyler ISD.

What was your favorite subject/activity/involvement in high school? Why?

Outside of orchestra, it was fun playing soccer on the REL team for a few years before I got all wrapped up in the cello playing.

Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

It is hard to choose just one, but Marilyn McKinley was a great math teacher (even though I never felt like I was that great at math). I also can't forget Orchestra Director Michael Grinnell, who I had for all four  years. I really respect all educators because I don't know if I could ever have the patience to deal with teaching a bunch of high school kids!

What advice, if any, would you offer to high school students today?

Don't give up and don't settle for less. If you work hard enough, the sky is the limit.

Meredith completed her master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Alan Stepansky, and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas. She has also studied with Eugene Osadchy, David Geber and Hans Jensen. Meredith has attended numerous music festivals including Spoleto, Thy (Denmark), Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, Canada’s Young Artists’ Programme, Kennedy Center, Artosphere, Britt, Domaine Forget and Summit. She has also performed at Carnegie Hall with the Peace Piano Trio for a United Nations benefit.
