The John Tyler Orchestra made history recently by earning the Sweepstakes first division rating at UIL Concert and Sight Reading competition. This is only the second Sweepstakes in school history. The first was in the 2014 school year.
“UIL competition happens only once every school year for Orchestra, Choir and Band,” John Tyler Orchestra director Alex Blair said. “A rating of Sweepstakes is the highest rating judges can award, which has a significant amount of prestige attached and recognized across the state of Texas as a marker of the highest quality in student achievement.”
A panel of six state approved judges assess a school’s musical quality, skill and artistry to make a determination that an orchestra, band or choir is superior in all three categories.
The Robert E. Lee Orchestra also had a tremendous showing with Orchestra, Band and Choir all receiving Sweepstakes honors.
