Tyler ISD sixth and seventh graders are spending their summer mornings getting ready for next school year by participating in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Summer Bridge Math and Algebra Readiness program. The program works with students to help prepare for advanced math classes and/or Algebra I. Housed at Boulter Middle School and Hogg Middle School, approximately 120 students from all over the District are participating in the eight day program.
The Math program can be used to accelerate students from on-level 6th grade math to advanced 7th grade math, or as an additional instruction/enrichment program prior to or after 7th grade math. The Algebra Readiness program can be used to accelerate students from on-level 7th grade math to 8th grade Algebra I, or as an additional instruction/enrichment program prior to or after 8th grade math.
“AVID Summer Bridge Programs are designed to strengthen students’ skills and are correlated to national standards and skills,” Brittini Ooten, Tyler ISD secondary math instructional specialist, said. “The engaging, interactive lessons and collaborative activities incorporate strategies to help provide support and a solid foundation for closing any curricular gaps students may have from the year before.”
