“It is a joy to work with the 44 dedicated professional counselors of Tyler ISD! Together we focus on the personal, social/emotional, academic and career goals of our students” This statement from Tyler ISD Guidance and Counseling Director Leigh Anne Barber perfectly describes the purpose of the Guidance and Counseling department.
With a combined experience (Elementary and Secondary) of 425 years in school counseling, this group of educators strives every day to be a compassionate ear, a solution-focused problem-solver, a caring advocate and most of all a support system for their students and campuses.
All Tyler ISD counselors are Professional School Counselors and each wear many hats throughout the school day. Some of these responsibilities include:
character education and guidance;
student leadership responsibilities;
parent/family/student counseling sessions;
setting up resources for students/families;
determining prevention and intervention strategies;
college and career guidance;
To a counselor, what makes it all worthwhile is when student growth becomes visible to their teachers and parents and they begin to achieve great things.
“It is so rewarding to see students we work with walk across the stage at graduation. As counselors here in Tyler ISD, we are extremely supportive of each other as well. We rely a lot on each other and are always here for one another when needed.” – Elementary Counselor Leah Philley
