Tyler ISD hosts 'Lunar Odyssey' district robotics competition

January 16, 2020

Tyler ISD elementary and middle school students displayed out-of-this-world robotics skills during district-wide competitions Jan. 9 and 16 inside the Caldwell Arts Academy Gymnasium. Utilizing the competition theme of “2020: A Lunar Robotics Odyssey,” teams used their robotic creations to complete various challenges.

The first competition was for 4th grade through 8th grade students from Austin, Bell, Bonner, Caldwell, Clarkston, Dixie, Douglas, Griffin, Rice, and Andy Woods elementary schools as well as Boulter, Hogg, Moore, and Three Lakes middle schools. Approximately 90 students, or 23 teams, created three zones on an arena board where they chose a variety of challenges to attempt.

The second competition included 1st through 3rd graders from Austin, Bell, Birdwell, Caldwell, Clarkston, Dixie, Douglas, Jack, Orr, Owens, Peete, Ramey, Rice, and Andy Woods elementary schools. For this competition, nearly 75 students in 19 teams used motorized machines to assist or enhance an astronaut's work environment.
